YUTAN PUBLIC SCHOOLS LONG RANGE FACILITIES PLAN
BOND ISSUE
Dear Residents of Our School District, August 22, 2008
Your Board of Education would like to you learn about the upcoming special election on Tuesday, September 9th for Yutan Public Schools. In recent months the School Board and community members have worked together developing Long Range Tax Management and Facilities Planning for our District.
After many discussions and meetings, Board and community representatives felt that a conservative, phased improvement plan was best for both educational and tax management purposes. The upcoming election addresses educational and academic space needs for cost effective additions and renovations to our Junior-Senior High School. Since construction started on that building 35 years ago, only very minor upgrades have occurred at this building. Educational programs for our kids have seen wonderful changes in three decades! A cost management decision to build an economical pre-engineered structure for support needs next to the current bus facility paves the way for addressing the main needs in this election.
The proposed plan is geared toward academics. There will be small additions on the west and east sides of the building, plus remodeling projects within the actual building itself. The improvements address renovated science areas, two full size Lab/Classrooms for Technologies, Project Study and Business areas, addition of general academic classrooms, Library, Media and Technologies expansion, and improvements in the multi-use areas for Music and Art as well as PE and general activities areas.
The building entrance area will also be improved to provide for better security and access to the office areas.
Tax Management Planning has been a high priority for the District. Only a small change in levy is required for all the work that is proposed to be done. The initial levy is expected to be about 5.9 cents for the first few years and then will be gradually less until our old debt is paid off. After that, the annual levy will continue to drop until the bonds are retired with a levy just over 3 cents in the final years. Managed costs and low interest rates available allow that a typical home and lot in the District assessed at $100,000 would see a tax change of only about $4.92 per month to fund the needed improvements. That is only a small fraction of the levy that was needed for the elementary work done not very long ago.
Even though the levy change is small, we feel this is an important step needed to improve our schools in a very cost effective way. We encourage you to come to our open houses, read up on the subject, and then vote your preference. Please feel free to contact either the District office, 625-2243 or any of your Board Members with questions that you might have.
Sincerely,
Chad Karloff 625-2233
