Underwater Cities

Sixth graders designed an underwater city.  The following pictures and captions describe their city and how they will handle the tremendous pressure of the ocean, the cold temperatures, and lack of light.  Double click any pictures to get a better look at their city.

 My Underwater City

By:  Daniel

The city is close to the shore and is floating under water. There are holes in the top to get air. There is a train to take the trash away and  to take people and food to the city. You get food and other goods at the mall. You will live in apartment houses. You live in one big city. You walk from place to place. There is energy from the sun. You can only have one pet. The holes in the roof are small holes to get water. This is a good place to live!!

This city isn’t too far underwater but is pretty far. It is a city that can hold ten million people and the walls can withstand 20 tons of pressure. There is mall where people can buy food, clothes, and other supplies. I thought people might want fun so I made a place for entertainment. I knew that people would get hurt so I made a hospital just in case. I made a school to learn in and a church for people to worship their religion. I  knew people would need electricity so I made a solar panel so they have electricity. People need heat so you burn their garbage and put an air purifier so the air is clean and warm. I knew the city would be really heavy so I made pure rods holding it up. Don’t forget the police and a jail!

My Underwater City

My city is right off the shore of California not to deep into the ocean so the pressure isn’t as great and not as cold. There is a huge apartment that has two hundred rooms. The city is supplied with food by having a section of it be farmland. The city is only one big dome that has a school, church, hospital, and apartment. There is a big tunnel that leads to land to take your garbage and just to get out of the dome. There is a solar panel at the top of the dome with wires that go down to another huge panel to give off light and heat. The way they get oxygen is there are two fans, one each in a tube. There is no wild life in my city but you can have pets in the apartment if you get rid of all the waste they produce so it doesn’t stink.

How will my city deal with the water pressure? My city will float to the top of the ocean. The people of the city will live in neighborhoods, and some of the people will work at the places, like the farm, school, hospital, store, and wildlife areas.  If the families want to visit the people on land there is an bus that comes ever thirty minutes and picks up and drops off people off. There is one road that goes to land. If the city floats the sun and air come from the big tubes, and when it rains the tubes close. The light source comes from some of the water. The wildlife area  has a fence around it. The fence is about 2 miles long.

My city is called Crazy City. It is called Crazy City because the hospital is missing a floor. It deals with pressure by having a big container over the whole city. The people in my city live in apartment-houses. The city is supplied with food by through a tube that spits out food every day. My city has steps so you can go from building to building. If you want to go back to land you swipe a card through a machine and it shoots you through a tube to land. There is a big oxygen tank above the city. There are no animals in my city. There is a tall building for storing garbage.

It’s year 2089, we now have the technology to build living quarters under the sea! For air what we have done is put it slightly above the water and put large holes in the top for air. When weather turns bad the holes immediately close up. Heat and light is provided by solar energy panels at the top of the ocean. Food is easily provided. It is grown in its own separate dome. The living quarters are almost identical to what you would find on land, it has every thing you would ever need. Garbage is easily taken care of because it goes through a room and gets zapped away by a laser beam. When you want to travel back to land all you have to do is hop on the Under Water Hover Transportation Vehicle (U.W. H.T. V.), for short, and it will transport you to the nearest land. Tunnels and elevators make it easy to go to place to place. You may think the pressure would be tremendous but it really isn’t because of the holes at the top of the dome.

My city will be on the bottom of the ocean. The people will live in both houses and apartments.  They will get food for the city by restaurants and grocery stores transporting it from the surface through submarines.  Light and oxygen will come from the tubes at the top of the picture. People travel to schools, stores, and other places by using the submarines. People will get back to land using the submarines. Pets will live in Underwater City. Recycling of trash would help eliminate all the garbage that the humans would produce.

In this city you float on the surface of the ocean.  Food is delivered by boat or grown in the Underwater City.  Meat is butchered for the meat supply.  People live in one giant complex.  Reinforced steel sidewalks connect each complex together. To get back to land you have to take the city ocean liner. Light from the sun will add warmth to the city. The park and the other trees in town provide oxygen for the city. Each family is limited to two pets. There is also no throwing away of garbage.  Everything is recycled.

The Underwater city I created floats in the middle of the ocean.  The pressure is not very intense there. People would live in neighborhoods. We would go to shore to get food. Tunnels would connect the city so that we could go to different places. We would travel by little submersible crafts. We would connect a tube to a hyper thermal vent to provide heat for our city.  Besides submersible crafts we will have a tube like elevator to get to the surface. The city would also have solar panels to get the suns warmth.  There will be farming and pets in this city.  People would recycle the garbage they make and it will be used for electricity.

My Underwater City

By: Evan R.

My city will be at the bottom of the ocean.  The tremendous pressure on the bottom of the ocean will be dealt with by a huge thick glass cover surrounding the city.  It will be similar to a gigantic bubble.  My people will have apartments and condos with furniture and TV’s.  I would supply the city with food by having fish as the main food item.   There also will be would have underwater crops.  The city would be all in one and you would have to go through tunnels to get from building to building.  I would have rocket cars that travel automatically up to land for supplies.  Fish swimming in a treadmill like generator will provide heat and electricity for the city.  I would provide oxygen by having a lot of plants.  Light would be provided by the sun through tubes.  For food, I would have huge fields of crops.  Pets like iguanas, dogs, cats, birds, and lions will live inside my city. I would take care of garbage by people putting their trash into mini bubbles that would float to the top of the ocean.  Land dwellers would be hired to pick up the garbage and bring it to landfills.

My city is one big bubble that can deal with the amount of pressure underneath the water. It is bolted to the floor of the ocean. In the living area people will live in two huge apartments with 500 rooms that hold five people per room. I would supply the city with food by growing it in the farming area and transporting it through a big tube. My city is all in one big bubble with everything inside. I have a big tube running from the bubble to the earth’s surface with a platform inside to hold people and products. I provide heat and light from the big heaters and light providers. The oxygen comes down with the transportation too. There is even a wildlife area with two of every animal. Then they can have pets in the apartments. The garbage has its own tube to run the non-recyclable trash to the earth landfills.  They will have many plants in may city also.

My Underwater City will be at the bottom of the ocean. All the buildings and houses are made out of steel to help keep the water out.  Most people would live in family friendly neighborhoods. I have a garden full of food. I have a submarine that will take you from place to place. We would travel back to land by a submarine. We would get light and heat from the sun.  Oxygen will come from the huge gardens will many plants.   We would also provide food from the garden. There are many people with pets in this city. We have a garage landfill that takes care of our garage problem.  It actually will be in the ocean floor.

In my Underwater City, you can live your life just as if you were on land, except for the fact that as you’re walking down the street

you might see a whale or a shark swim by! There is a giant light bulb “sun” for light and heat. There is corn and livestock such as cattle, horses and pigs, for food. We have two schools, a elementary school and a high school, to complete your child’s educational needs. For oxygen, we have air pumps, and in the Village, the streets are rivers, filled by water pumps. You can take a paddleboat or a canoe and row (or paddle) to your friend’s house. We also supply you with apartments and houses to rent or buy. You can have pets of any kind in your home.

My Underwater City

This city mostly floats on the surface of the water so the pressure is not as great.  In this underwater city, there are both apartments and neighborhoods.  The main food is fish, because the city is underwater.  Tubes that shoot you to your destination connect the city. To get back to land you use a tube that connects the city to land.

There are heat rooms for hot and cold temps.  There are also solar panels for energy, which power the buildings and the lights.  For oxygen, there are tiny holes on the top of the city above the water, which suck in the air.  For pets, many types of sea creatures are kept like sharks, swordfish, etc.

Extremely high water pressure will be dealt with by using a very thick piece of clear metal that will hold the water out of the city. This city will be located at the bottom of the ocean. The people of this city will live in houses that are in neighborhoods.  Food comes from huge fields that will be in the Underwater City.  There will be transporting tubes so the people can get from place to place. To get back to land you would have to go through a very thick tube. You will get heat, oxygen, and light from earth.  Any animal that you have as a pet on earth you can have in this underwater city. There is a big garbage dump on the outside of Underwater City.

In my city we are close to the surface so we don’t need any heaters or worry about pressure. We have living quarters, a shopping area, school, food (cattle and vegetarian area), and a garage for our underwater submersible. We also catch fish for food like Sushi and we use the gills of the fish for our clothes. We have huge fire blasts holding the buildings up.  We have a half glass sphere surrounding the fire so it shoots out warm water at 70 miles per hour. The garage holds our submersibles. In our submersibles, we can fish and go to the surface. In our schools, our kids learn how we keep our water pure. We have a purifier that sucks in salt water and purifies it. Our kids also learn how we survive under the pressure and how we built our city under the water.  The secret is we got into scuba suits, submarines/ submersibles and our hands the hands to build this city. All the buildings have tubes to get from one to another. We have a tube that goes to the surface for oxygen. We have only fish for pets because other animals couldn’t survive. We don’t have much garbage, but we get rid of garbage by sending it up to the surface to a landfill.

In my city the people will be able to live because their homes are made of the best materials to withstand the water pressure.  They would have some sort of tubes that connect to each other’s houses.  I would supply the city with food by hiring a messenger to go up to the surface and get the foods that they either can’t grow or raise.  They would travel to the land by giant tubes that have small submarines.  It would automatically take you to the surface.  I would get light and heat by having a large solar panel on the surface of the ocean, and if they needed more energy I would use hydrothermal vents. Oxygen would be brought to the city by large tubes that will go to the surface.  People would not be able to have any more than one pet because there isn’t very much food or space.  I would take care of garbage by using a laser to zap it so all that all that is left are piles of ashes than the fish will use as food.  It would be really cool to live in an under water city.

My Underwater city

By: Nathan S.

In the underwater city there is clean fresh air from air filters. There are also heaters that get their heat from hydrothermal vents.  We get our electricity from the flow of water.  We get our light for the underwater city from an artificial sun.  We supply the underwater city with food with a cattle ranch, super markets, produce markets and restaurants.

To travel to other places you go in a transporter.  One punch of a button and it will take you anywhere.  Every house has one connected to them.  The transporters can take you to stores, churches, schools, restaurants, and entertainment spots.  We would take care of the garbage problem by recycling it or sending it up to the land dwellers and having them deal with it.  We will adjust to the pressure at the bottom of the ocean by having black pressure reducers everywhere connected on the city.

The pets or wildlife live in a wildlife center just like a zoo. The people would live in a neighborhood.  The city is all in one like one big bubble.

My Underwater City

By: Dallas S.

The three main problems about having a underwater city is tremendous pressure, the extreme cold, and lack of light.  I have posts holding my underwater city up. The people live in a dome that is sort of like one big bubble.  I would have a tube that people would enter to go to the surface.  I would provide heat, oxygen, and light by heat lamps, trees, and a sunroof.  I would have a wildlife preserve for animals to keep them happy.  I would get rid of our garbage by putting it in a tube that would suck it into a garbage barge that would bring it to the surface to a landfill.

My Underwater City

By: Nile L.

My city has 5-inch thick glass walls to withstand the pressure.  My underwater city is not all the way at the bottom of the ocean so the pressure is not very strong. There would be a food and garbage truck to take care of those two issues. It also has a heater, air supply, and lights so normal pets could live in people’s houses.  My underwater city is one city with an elevator so people could get to land.  Each person has there own house also.

My Underwater City

The city of Dell is not going to have to worry about pressure.  It will be floating near the top of the ocean.  The city will be one huge area with different compartments.  People can get to land to visit relatives or friends by taking a large elevator to the top. Everyone will be living in one big neighborhood. Many artificial suns and moons will provide heat and light. One sun and moon will be provided in each room. The plants and grass in every room will provide the oxygen. We do have wildlife and farm animals. People can kill them for food, or we can have the fruits and vegetables that the farmers grow. The garbage from the city will be burned and used to create electricity. I hope you enjoy your visit to the underwater city of Dell.

My Underwater City

By: Luke S

My city has two parts. There are the living quarters where everyone in the city lives.  The education/entertainment/food quarters are where the kids go to school and go have fun such as a movie theater, arcade, or by playing laser tag. The city will get food by using helicopters bringing large boxes full of food and supplies every week. They drop them down large tubes that run from the city to the surface of the ocean. For electricity they burn coal in a large building which also has a large tube that goes about half way to the surface.  A large box that purifies the smoke and a large fan brings the warm air back to the city for warmth. To withstand the pressure there is a large thick layer of clear fiberglass that is strong enough to withstand the pressure. Traveling in the city you will use large tubes that humans can get into.  The people in Underwater City can visit surface dwellers by using a long tube that contains an elevator that you can use to travel back to the surface. For the garbage problem, you burn the garbage and it is purified by a large fan.  It also will warm the city.

Living under the ocean will be very difficult.  Hopefully, one day we can live down there.  It would probably not happen in my lifetime though.  If I could build a city underneath the ocean this report will tell you how it would deal with those problems.

If you ever went to a pool and tried to swim down deep it would be very difficult because of the pressure.  Imagine living every single day with the pressure much greater then a 10 foot pool.  My city would have a steel bubble surrounding it.  It would be able to withstand the pressure.  In the container there would be a neighborhood and a market.  I would supply the city with food by growing food in the market place.  If we needed to go up on the land people could travel there by using a tunnel.

There has to be light, heat, and oxygen to survive. There would be a giant light that would provide heat and light.  The farmlands would also provide oxygen.

Some people can’t live without pets therefore my city will allow many different types of pets.  Maybe someday there would be a zoo down there.

Everything that will be used in underwater city will be recycled.  If it can’t be recycled it isn’t allowed.  That should take care of any garbage problems.

My Underwater City

By: Parker R.

The city is floating in the water.  It is in a bubble that can protect the entire city.  The people would live in neighborhoods all over the town.  There is a store for food.  My city is similar to most land cities because there will be streets and cars.  Traveling back to land would be through an open air tube in a balloon.  It would fly up to land very quickly and inexpensively.  Underwater City will have stores and places to get heat, light, and even pure oxygen.  Huge fields full of different fresh fruit and vegetables will provide food.  Pet stores will be available for humans to continue to own and buy pets.  The city will recycle most of its garbage plus an underground landfill will take the non-recyclable items.

My Underwater City

I deal with the tremendous pressure of the ocean by building the city’s outer walls with the most reinforced glass ever created.  It can withstand any force. I will make the city’s temperature normal by hydroelectric heating systems. Even though the floor of the ocean is extremely dark, I use hydroelectric power for the lights. My city will float in the mid-section of the ocean so the pressure will be very high. Apartments will be the main type of housing.  Ships will provide tons of food for the city.  A big vacuum tube will shoot the food into the city. The city would be all in one place because it’s such a huge city to separate. There is a center where people can travel to the land.  The city’s heat and light is provided by hydroelectric power while the oxygen is pumped in through pipes that come out of the ocean.  A few animals such as dogs, cats, and other domestic pets will be allowed. I will take care of garbage by installing non-pollution incinerators in each house.

Underwater City

By: Thomas Pascarelli

My city will be able to cope with many of the problems of being underwater. To deal with the tremendous pressure under the water, it has special pressurized compartments that counteract the outside pressure. It also has living quarters that feature actual houses instead of apartments. This city will import some of its fruits and vegetables while the rest is grown here.  Its meats all have to be imported because there is no room to have all the livestock to live. If one wants to go back to the land there is a sub bay which also acts as a port for the imports and exports. This city is like a plant because it has one main part then it branches out to other areas.  Heat, energy for lights, and other needs that require energy will be produced by deep sea vents which are also used to destroy garbage. Its oxygen is produced by a massive greenhouse.  Even with all its modern technology, one thing will not allowed, pets or animals.

My Underwater City

By:  Abby S.

My underwater city is almost completely round to avoid the immense pressure. The city is in large bubbles. One bubble would hold a large town with individual houses, another bubble would hold the school, the church, and so on. But the hospital is in its own bubble because it needs to be quiet and clean (plus it is really big). There are farms and areas where fish are cooked and plants are grown. Plus there is an area where bulls and pigs are killed for their meat.  The meat packing plants are in the back of the Main Bubble, or the bubble with the businesses. All the bubbles are connected so you don’t have to get wet going from place to place. Cars, vans, and trucks are specially designed to travel through the water to other cities or to the surface. There are vents that bring light from the surface, trees for oxygen, and the bubbles have weather control so the city and it’s inhabitants experience the same seasons as people on land, plus they are non-accessible to fish. There is a large zoo filled with all sorts of animals and people keep pets in their houses. Garbage is disintegrated and used to fertilize the soil. I guess you could say my city has everything!

My underwater town is just like living on land. It is called Yundertan, and it has a hospital/dentist’s office, a church called “Church of Everyone,” where anyone is welcome. We also have a police and fire department and a park where children of all ages can play. Down here we have a mall with a Wal-Mart, Target, a clothes and toys store, and food courts. In Yundertan we also have a lot of places for fun, like a bowling alley and a place for the kids like, Adventure Land. We do have a school that teaches your kid or kids everything they need to know. In school we have activities such as basketball, softball, track, and volleyball. Our living section is great! You get to choose what kind a house you want to live in. Some people like living on farms where our food is grown or hunted, and some like cities. Yundertan gets it’s light and air by tubes that transport it from land to where we live. We get our heat from a building on land and in the summer we just turn it off because it is already cold down here. So even though we’re blue, we are always happy! Come on down and see for yourself.

The city is at the bottom of the ocean, covered by a giant bubble that can withstand pressure and ocean creatures. There would be neighborhoods with apartments, schools, etc. The food would be sent through the tube by people on the surface. To travel from place to place or to the surface you would exit a tube to enter the water in a submarine and go to where you want to. On the bubble, there are many heaters to keep the city warm. To get light, there are fires, made from burnt trash, and streetlights. There would be plants and the tube to the surface for oxygen. You could have pets  if you wanted to.

If we would live underwater, there would be a lot of water pressure.  I would put a bubble that would not break when pressure hits it. My city would float where the pressure isn't as great.  It would be close to the surface so we can still get on land.  People would live in apartments.  The city would not be as big.  There is a Wal-Mart so people can get food and supplies as they need.  You would have to enter the water to get oxygen, light, and electricity from the land.  We would grow food on the land and then bring it down to the city.  There is an animal care center for all animals in the underwater city.  A tube is there for garbage and it sends the garbage up on the land into a dump.  The other stores are for weddings and other fancy things.

Underwater City

By: Nate J.

This city is no ordinary city. It is at the bottom of the ocean. The tremendous pressure is handled by very strong fiberglass. There are some apartments like houses and some regular houses. A tube is connected to the city from the land above and food is transported through it. There are two fiberglass domes near each other for housing and recreation. To travel to land, there are transportation tubes. There is a solar-powered sun replacement for light and heat. Oxygen is handled by the fiberglass domes so the people of the city can breathe. Pets can live in the outdoor parts of the domes or in the houses and there is no need for wildlife because you could easily be transported to the land above. Garbage is transported above and sent to regular dumps.

My Underwater Ocean City

My underwater is right off the coast of Hawaii. My underwater city has everything a normal city should have and more! My city is all the way down at the very bottom of the ocean and can withstand any amount of pressure because it is in a bunch of domes. You can travel from dome to dome with a lifetime supply of a chapstick that allows you to do whatever you can do on land, underwater. My people live in normal houses except for one thing… the houses have a little computer in every room. You can use these computers as a regular computer with the internet and whenever you are hungry it will give you whatever food you desire. You don’t have to worry about transportation or getting back to land because to move around underwater or get back to land you use a hat portal. Each dome has a light bulb, oxygen pipe, and giant thermostat. All our animals can either stay in our houses or the Agricultural Animal Housing Association. All of the garbage transports through a giant tube back to land. I hope you enjoy your stay in my city!!!

My city floats on top of the ocean. People live in apartments. People fish for food. The city is all in one place. There is a ferry that takes you back to land. There is a general store. There are horses in the stable. The people are only allowed to recycle. They can recycle anything.

This is the Underwater City.  It is at bottom of the ocean.  All the people live in apartments.  We have a tube that goes to the Earth and the fish. We made a mall that gets an endless supply of food. We have our entire city in one place so no other animals can get in. We use the tube I was talking about earlier to get to land.  We all have heat, oxygen, and light. The best thing you would like about our place is that we have a wild life center. We have forests for them too. The amount of pressure is a lot so… we use very thick glass. We get the heat from our heat corporation which is connected to the top of the Earth .  The energy plant helps us with our TV so we can watch the news.  It also helps with lack of light. We hope you   come to see our underwater city!

Pressure will be no problem for my city. It is surounded by one giant bubble. In my city we live in neighborhoods. For food there is a tunnel that leads straight to market places on land. To get from space to space you have to drive your hover car in the bubble. There is a big tunnel that you step in and the air glides you to the top. There is a long tube that you get air through. The tube extends to the top of the water. There is a huge solar plate that collects energy and sends it into the bubble so we can have heat and light and all that other stuff we would need. I wanted to made my underwater city as much like Earth as I could, so I did put pets and other animals in my city. They live in the environmental area that I created in my city. I also put things such as flowers and other plants in the environmental area, just like on land. I would dispose all the garbage through a tube that is always pumping air upwards. So the garbage goes straight to a landfill on the land.
