A former sixth grade student and his
family recently traveled to Egypt. The following photos are
a few that were taken.
Thanks Jeremiah B. for taking
these.

The Egyptians worshiped
dozens of different gods and goddesses. This building shows
some of the most important.
Obelisks stood outside temples and
represented the benben, the sacred sun symbol.
They had small pyramids on top, which were often covered
with gold. When the sun lit the pyramid, the god entered his
temple. Two obelisks once stood at the Sun Temple at
Heliopolis.

A secret passageway
through a pyramid. During the Middle Kingdom kings created
extra passages and false shafts to try and fool
robbers.
The Great Sphinx looks
east toward the rising sun. It has the body of a crouching
lion and the face of a king, probably Khafra.
From a distance, the
pyramids of Giza are an awesome, majestic sight.
The Great Pyramid of
Khufu is 481 ft high. This is taller than most world-famous
monuments.
The pyramids were built
mainly of limestone, which was quarried near the site.
Notice the size of each block.
Tourists can actually see
how massive the pyramids are by walking up to them along a
narrow pathway.
King Menkaura's pyramid
(left) stands 218 ft high. The three smaller pyramids
(right) were built for Menkaura's three queens.
Wall paintings and
carvings were found inside and outside many buildings in
ancient Egypt.

Step pyramids predate
true pyramids. The step pyramid was not truly a symbol of
the sun, but was rather a gigantic stairway that facilitated
the access of the pharaoh's soul to heaven.
